چکیده
62 LLE Review, Volume 78 Pulsed laser beams with two-dimensional smoothing by spectral dispersion (2-D SSD), used in inertial confinement fusion (ICF), improve the on-target uniformity on the OMEGA laser system;1–4 however, 2-D SSD is highly susceptible to significant amplitude modulation (AM) during its generation and propagation.5–8 In addition to on-target uniformity, the smoothness of the pulsed beam as it propagates through the long laser amplifier chain is important because of the perennial concern regarding laser damage. Small-scale, nonlinear self-focusing can occur as the pulsed beam propagates through various optical components because of the large fluences inherent in ICF applications. Any AM, in space or time, present on the pulsed beam may induce self-focusing and lead to damage. OMEGA utilizes many spatial filters to help alleviate the buildup of high spatial frequencies that tend to self-focus. In an effort to reduce the overall AM, it is imperative that the AM produced by the SSD driver line is at an absolute minimum.

Ultrashort, Strongly Focused Laser Pulses in Free Space
Technological advances in ultrafast optics now allow the generation of laser pulses whose duration is as short as a few optical cycles of the electric field; furthermore, these pulses can be focused to a spot size comparable to the wavelength. These strongly focused, ultrashort laser pulses have found applications, for instance, in high-resolution microscopy, particle trapping and electron acce...

The focal field distribution of tightly focused laser beams in turbid media is sensitive to optical scattering and therefore of direct relevance to image quality in confocal and nonlinear microscopy. A model that considers both the influence of scattering and diffraction on the amplitude and phase of the electric field in focused beam geometries is required to describe these distorted focal fie...
متن کاملFabrication of synchronized hammer peening with pulsed laser welding and its effect on 6061 aluminum alloy weld
The non-continuous laser beam in pulsed lasers allows the mechanical peening between two consecutive beams on a still hot weld bead. At a very short time (20, 150 and 300 ms) after laser pulse application, mechanical peening was performed on the welding bead. To achieve these short times, the light sensor detects the nth laser pulse and the mechanical arm starts moving. Upon reaching the tip of...

We propose an all-optical method of creating electron vortices utilizing the Kapitza-Dirac effect. This technique uses the transfer of orbital angular momentum from photons to free electrons creating electron vortex beams in the process. The laser intensities needed for this experiment can be obtained with available pulsed lasers and the resulting electron beams carrying orbital angular momentu...

The cooling of molecules during the adiabatic expansion of supersonic seeded molecular beams is reviewed and illustrated by the example of NO -molecules. The reduction of the Doppler width by collimation of the beam and the cooling to low rotational temperatures brings a significant simplification of the complex NO -absorption spectrum and allows its assignment.
